Hitachi Develops 100GB Blu-Ray Disk Compatible With PS3
Posted: October 7, 2007
Hitachi has just reported that their new 100GB Blu-Ray discs will be compatible with the Sony PS3. A firmware update will be required, but that is all that will be needed. Besides this being bragging rights over the XBox 360's HD-DVD format, which only holds 51GB, this is great news for game developers as it gives much headroom for future games. Even the first generation title, Resistance: Fall Of Man filled 16 of the 25GB available on a single layer Blu-Ray disc. The 100GB disc supports quad layer technology, with 25GB per layer. Hitachi is also developing an eight layer Blu-Ray disc with a capacity of, you guessed it, 200GB. Although no new hardware is needed for your PS3 to read these, the actual price per disc on the manufacturers side is sure to be more than a sigle or dual layer Blu-Ray disc.
